Vegan Brisbane
So I didn’t get to see much of vegan Brisbane. Jetstar had me arriving in Brisbane, oh, eight hours later than my original itinerary intended, which meant I lost a day of eating. Then Kuan-Yin Teahouse is shut on Tuesdays, and Mondo Organics was a bit out of my budget.
BUT! I did finally get a chance to tackle the famed Kombi Drivers Breakfast at The Alibi Room – as talked about by Cindy and Michael, and Kristy and Toby.
The menu promises: Spiced breakfast tofu, vegan toast, mushrooms, beans, spinach, tomato, hash brown, vegan bacon and sausages, sweet potato chips, soy coffee and juice.
This is how it looks:

As I ate I realised there was no bacon! But considering how much food there was it seemed churlish to ask. I love the little packs of Nuttelex. The breakfast is pretty amazing. The sausages were homemade, crumbly, soft and slightly spicy. The hashbrowns were fried up chunks of potato, and simply awesome. The sweet potato chips were glazed in a maple syrup and there were fuckloads of them – too many, really. Sure the bread was pretty boring (white sliced) and the beans could have been homemade, but it was pretty brilliant. I ate most of it, except half the beans and a few potato chips. And it’s all for the budget price of $20 for one person, $36 for two.
Then when I left I realised that there had been no spicy tofu either!! I didn’t feel ripped off exactly, but it would have been even more awesome with the tofu. Maybe there would be less chips and more tofu, which would have been more balanced.
After I had a lie down I went out for lunch with a friend, to The Forest. I was stuffed, so I thought I might have a salad. But then I thought fuck it, I didn’t come to Brisbane for salad, and I had a peanut butter cheesecake.
Unfortunately, it was served with a FACE OF CHOCOLATE SAUCE, and friends will know that food in the shape of faces kind of freaks me out. I mean, really, is this appetising:

It was tasty though – completely amazing. And only $6. I went back to The Forest for dinner that night (no photos), and had rice and two curries. It was pretty average – kind of like Soul Mama/Vegie Hut food. It was cheap though, only $8.

It’s a shame you missed out on Kuan Yin, but the Forest desserts are ample consolation! I wouldn’t rave about the savoury dishes there either, though Michael loves the Forest’s pies.

Love the forest! Though I thought $6 for a piece of cake was a bit pricey, but I suppose I almost never buy cake out so I don’t know what normal is…
